NOTE: I’m going to refer to Ansel Adams and his famous half dome picture in this post. In no way am I comparing myself to him or my picture to that, like that really needs to be said. Go easy on me.
Two years ago I had the chance to travel to Pacific Rim National Park and spend several days exploring, experiencing, and trying to translate those experiences into photographs. It stands as one of the best photographic experiences of my life. The image above is my own personal Moon with Half Dome.
For those who don’t know, one of Ansel Adams most famous images was Moon with Half Dome. Click here to see. In no way am I comparing the two images but capturing that image must have been iconic for him. As my photograph above is for me. I have been capturing images since I was 15 or 16. In all that time i believe this to be one on my best photographs.
This is strange for me in a couple of ways. First, it comes nearly two decades after my career as a photographer came to an end. There was a time when I was paid to shoot every day, all day. I don’t believe I have an image from all that time better than the above. Basically I shot this on vacation. Second, I had to travel 6000 km to get this. I find that weird because I have made Nova Scotia home for a decade. I know its nooks and crannies. The question that keeps coming up is not why I found such a great picture in Pacific Rim but rather where is the one from here?
For the moment I’ll take what I can get. Good photographs for me are still far more about luck than skill. But damn its fun!
Note: My vertical images aren’t showing up great in this blog (too small) but I’m working on it.
