October 2009 I received an invite from by brother and his family to join them for their annual trip to Victoria, on beautiful Vancouver Island, for exploring, vacationing, and whale watching. It had been nearly 20 years since I spent any time there so I was psyched for the trip. And any excuse to spend time with my nephews is good enough for me!
As part of my trip, I made plans to take a few extra days and go off on my own to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park. Old haunts that I was dying to get back too! The photograph above comes from day one of that trip. A walk in Pacific Rim National Park. One of the most amazing places I have ever experienced in Canada.

To be honest I have no explanation for this result. It certainly wasn’t a plan. It was day one and I hadn’t done any real scouting outside of scouring maps on the flight over. It was the perfect combination of circumstances. Weather, Light, Surf, and me. A thousand things on my trip from Victoria to Tofino could have prevented me from capturing this image. In a weird way this ClosedFocus is connected to that image. One of the purposes of this blog is to force me to get out and shoot more. At the end of the day I was able to capture this image for the sole reason I got off my butt and put myself in a position to take it.
Startling simple really.
